What Is OTD Price in Florida — and Why It's the Only Number That Matters

A dealer advertises a car at $32,000. You leave the dealership having paid $37,400. The difference is not fraud — it's the gap between the advertised price and the Out-The-Door price. In Florida, that gap is consistently larger than most buyers expect.

What OTD price means

The Out-The-Door (OTD) price is the total amount you will actually pay to drive the car home — including the vehicle price, all government taxes, title, registration, and every dealer fee. It is the only number that matters in any car purchase negotiation.

Every other number — MSRP, internet price, negotiated price — is a partial figure. Dealers use partial figures strategically, because the gap between the partial price and the OTD price is where a significant portion of their profit lives.

The one rule: Never negotiate based on MSRP or internet price. Always negotiate the Out-The-Door total. Every dollar saved on the OTD price is a real dollar in your pocket — not a dollar shifted to another line item.

What the OTD price includes in Florida

Florida's OTD price has four components. Understanding each one lets you calculate your own estimate before setting foot in any dealership.

Vehicle price. The negotiated price of the car itself — the number most buyers focus on. This is your starting point, not your ending point.

Florida sales tax. Florida charges 6% state sales tax on vehicle purchases, plus a county surtax that varies by location — typically 0.5% to 1.5%. Miami-Dade and Broward counties charge the full 1% surtax. Expect approximately 6.5–7% total on the negotiated vehicle price.

Title and registration fees. Set by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Title transfer is approximately $75–$85. Registration fees depend on vehicle weight — typically $100–$200 for most passenger vehicles. License plates are additional if you're not transferring existing plates.

Dealer fees. Florida has no cap on the documentation fee — it can range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the dealer. Additional fees (electronic filing, dealer prep, market adjustment) may also appear. Some are negotiable; some are not.

How to calculate your OTD price before visiting any dealer

Use this formula with any vehicle you're considering. The example below is for a $32,000 vehicle in Broward County:

OTD Price Estimate — Florida (Broward County example)
Negotiated vehicle price$32,000
Florida sales tax (6% state)$1,920
Broward County surtax (1%)$320
Title transfer fee$75
Registration (estimated)$150
Documentation fee (average FL)$998
Electronic filing (estimated)$100
Estimated OTD total$35,563

This estimate excludes optional F&I products (GAP, extended warranty, etc.) and any market adjustment or dealer prep fees. Actual amounts vary by dealer and county.

The gap between the advertised price ($32,000) and this estimate ($35,563) is $3,563 — before any optional products. This is the number you need to budget for, and it's the number that should anchor your negotiation.

Why dealers prefer not to discuss OTD price upfront

When a buyer focuses on the vehicle price alone, dealers have more room to move numbers around. A $500 reduction on the car price can quietly be offset by a higher doc fee, an added product in F&I, or a financing rate slightly above what was discussed.

When a buyer asks for the OTD price in writing first, that flexibility disappears. Every fee has to be disclosed, and any increase in one category has to come out of another. This is why asking for the OTD price upfront is the single most effective move a Florida car buyer can make.

The exact words to use

Walk in — or call — with this phrase ready: "Before we discuss anything else, can you give me the complete Out-The-Door price for this vehicle in writing?"

A transparent dealer will produce this immediately. A dealer that hesitates, deflects to monthly payments, or says they "can't do that until we know your financing" is signaling that their numbers won't survive scrutiny. That's a signal to compare other options before committing.

Once you have an OTD price: A CARTRIGO broker can review it in under 24 hours — comparing the fees against Florida market averages, identifying anything above typical, and flagging any line items you should negotiate or decline before signing.
