The Ultimate Dealership
Survival Checklist

1. Negotiate "Out-the-Door" (OTD) Price
Never negotiate based on the monthly payment. Dealers can manipulate loan terms to hit your monthly payment while drastically increasing the total cost. Always negotiate the final cash price including taxes and fees.
2. Secure Pre-approved Financing
Have a pre-approval from your bank or credit union before stepping foot in the dealership. Use it as leverage to force the dealer to beat your rate. If they can't, use your own bank.
3. Verify the "Money Factor" (Leasing Only)
If you are leasing, ask for the exact "Money Factor" (the interest rate). Dealers often mark this up secretly for extra profit. Multiply it by 2400 to find the equivalent APR percentage.
4. Detect and Decline Useless Add-ons
Look closely at the final itemized sheet. Politely but firmly decline high-margin dealer extras like VIN etching, nitrogen in tires, or forced paint protection unless you explicitly asked for them.
5. Separate the Trade-In
Negotiate the purchase price of the new car completely independently from the value of your trade-in. Never reveal you have a trade-in until the new car's price is locked in.
6. Analyze the Finance Office Offerings
The "F&I" (Finance & Insurance) office is where dealerships make their biggest margins. Carefully evaluate if you truly need an extended warranty or GAP insurance. Do not cave under pressure.
7. Read Every Final Line
Before signing the legally binding contract, verify that the numbers printed match exactly what you negotiated verbally. A "mistake" in the paperwork is almost never in your favor.
