How to Prepare Before Buying a Car in Florida | CARTRIGO
Station 1 of 4 ยท Strategic Preparation

Fundamentals of your
Purchase Route

Strategic clarity is the foundation of every sound decision. Know the rules before entering the dealer โ€” the concepts 90% of buyers ignore.

TCO โ€” Total Cost of Ownership

Don't just look at the monthly payment. The real cost includes depreciation, insurance, preventive maintenance and financing costs over the entire period.

Money Factor and Residual Value

In a lease, these two numbers determine everything. The MF is the disguised interest rate. The RV is the car's value at the end of the contract. Knowing them gives you total control.

Precio OTD โ€” Out the Door

The only number that matters. Car price + taxes + DMV fees + dealer fees. All in one number before entering the finance office.

External pre-approval

Arriving with a pre-approval from your bank or credit union gives you enormous negotiating leverage. The dealer must compete against that rate or lose the financing.

Market timing

Factory incentives, overstocked inventory and models with accelerated depreciation create buying windows. Knowing when to buy can be worth as much as knowing what to buy.

1. Industry Overview

I understand the difference between MSRP, Invoice Price and the final OTD price of the deal.

๐Ÿ’ก MSRP is the list price. Invoice is what the dealer paid the manufacturer. The real negotiable price sits between the two. OTD is what you pay including everything.

2. Vehicle Selection

I have analyzed the depreciation of the model I'm interested in and calculated the total cost of ownership over 3-5 years.

๐Ÿ’ก Some models lose 40-50% of their value in 3 years. Others retain value much better. This fact affects both the actual purchase cost and the Residual Value of a lease.

3. Pricing & Lease

I know the published Money Factor for this month and the standard Residual Value for the model I want.

๐Ÿ’ก The manufacturer-published MF is the starting point. Some dealers mark it up ("markup"). Knowing it allows you to demand the standard MF or better.

4. Smart Financing

I have or am obtaining an external pre-approval from my bank or credit union to compare against the dealer's rate.

๐Ÿ’ก Credit unions frequently offer rates 1-2% lower than dealers. That difference on a $35,000 loan can be $1,500-$3,000 in total interest.

5. Contracts & Legal

I can identify additional charges in the contract and can demand justification for each charge before signing.

๐Ÿ’ก Common fees to question: excessive "doc fee", "market adjustment", unrequested "protection packages", and "dealer accessories" installed without your consent.

6. Physical Inspection

I know the critical inspection points before accepting vehicle delivery.

๐Ÿ’ก Includes: verify VIN number, review carfax/history, UV light inspection for possible paint touch-ups, verify that the promised accessories are installed.

7. Delivery Strategy

I have the final documentation checklist ready and know which accessories should be included as agreed.

๐Ÿ’ก Delivery day is not the time to review. It's the time to confirm. Prepare your checklist 48 hours in advance and share it with your CARTRIGO broker.
