▼
OTD Price documented in writing
The complete Out-the-Door price is in the document before entering the finance office.
🚩 Without a written OTD price, the dealer can add charges later. Make sure everything is documented in writing before moving forward.
The "Market Adjustment" is justified or eliminated
Some dealers add a "market adjustment" charge over MSRP. It must have real justification or be negotiable.
🚩 "Market adjustments" are mostly negotiable. Request specific justification or demand its removal before proceeding.
Reasonable doc fee (less than $500)
The "documentation fee" varies by state. More than $500 in most states is excessive.
🚩 High doc fee. Many states have a legal limit. Ask your CARTRIGO broker to verify the cap for your state.
Installed accessories are those requested and at a fair price
Verify there are no accessories added without your consent (tinted windows, paint protection, etc.).
🚩 Unsolicited accessories detected. These can add $800-$2,500 to the price. Demand their removal or negotiation individually.
Taxes and DMV fees are correct for your state
Sales taxes and registration fees must match the actual rates in your state and city.
🚩 Verify the sales tax rate for your municipality. Errors of 0.5-1% on a $35k car equal $175-$350 extra.

APR (interest rate) clearly documented
The annual percentage rate must be in the contract — not just the monthly payment. These are two different figures.
🚩 Without visible APR, the dealer controls total interest cost. Demand to see the APR before signing any document.
Contract term matches what was verbally agreed
Confirm that the number of months in the contract is exactly what you agreed in the negotiation.Confirm that the number of months in the contract is exactly what you agreed upon in the negotiation.
🚩 Different term than agreed detected. A change from 60 to 72 months lowers the monthly payment but can cost you $1,500+ in additional interest.
For lease: Money Factor and Residual Value are correct
These two numbers determine the monthly lease payment. They must match those officially published by the manufacturer.
🚩 High Money Factor detected. The dealer may be marking up the MF. Demand the base manufacturer MF or request broker intervention.
No "spot delivery" or conditional financing clauses
Some clauses allow the dealer to change the conditions of financing terms days after delivery.
🚩 Spot delivery alert. The dealer may call you days later to tell you "the bank didn't approve" and offer you worse conditions. Do not leave with the car until you have confirmed financing.

Red flags you should know
before entering the F&I
The finance office is where the most money is lost. Know these tactics before sitting down.
🚩 "How much do you want to pay per month?"
This question shifts the conversation from total price to monthly payment — which allows the dealer to extend the term and increase the real cost without you noticing.
→ Always respond with the OTD price, not a monthly payment.
🚩 "This offer is today only"
Artificial time pressure. Designed to inhibit rational analysis and push you into an unprepared decision. Cars don't disappear overnight.
→ If you feel time pressure, that's exactly when you should wait.
🚩 Mixing price negotiation and trade-in
The dealer may give you a good trade price but compensate with a higher price on the new car, or vice versa. They are two separate transactions.
→ Negotiate the new car price first. Trade-in after, separately.
🚩 Non-itemized F&I packages
The F&I office may present "protection packages" without itemizing the cost of each element. Each product must be justified individually.
→ Ask to see the individual price of each F&I product before evaluating it.
🚩 "I just need your signature here"
Minimizing the importance of what you sign is a classic tactic. Every page you sign has real legal and financial consequences.
→ Read every page. If you don't understand something, don't sign until they explain it.
🚩 "Provisional" APR pending approval
Spot delivery: they let you take the car and days later they call you to tell you "the bank didn't approve" and offer you worse conditions.
→ Don't leave with the car until you have final, confirmed financing in writing.
